🌸 Story Time with Young Mahavir
To truly understand Jainism, we must understand the childhood of young Mahavira the little prince whose peaceful heart inspired millions. At the end of every blog in this series, we will explore one small story from Mahavir’s childhood.
Today’s story begins here… ✨
Young Mahavir and the Angry Serpent
One peaceful evening, young Mahavira wandered near the forests outside Kundagrama with a few other children from the kingdom. The golden sunlight slowly disappeared behind the trees while cool winds rustled through the leaves. Suddenly—
“STOP!” shouted one of the boys in fear.
Near a large rock, a huge black serpent lifted its hood high into the air. Its sharp eyes glowed fiercely, and its loud hiss echoed through the forest. The children screamed in terror.
“Run! It will bite us!” cried another boy.
Everyone stepped back in fear… except Mahavir. The young prince stood calm and still. The serpent slithered closer angrily, frightening everyone even more. But Mahavir did not pick up a stone. He did not attack. He did not run.
Instead, he slowly folded his hands with compassion.
The children looked shocked. “Prince Mahavir! Move away!” they shouted.
But Mahavir softly said, “Fear creates violence. Calmness creates peace.”
Very gently, he stepped closer to the serpent. The angry snake stared at him for a long moment. But something strange happened…The serpent slowly lowered its hood. Its fierce eyes softened. The forest became silent. Mahavir looked at the creature with kindness instead of fear. After a few quiet moments, the serpent peacefully turned away and disappeared back into the trees. The children stood frozen in amazement.“How were you not afraid?” one boy asked.
Mahavir smiled softly.
“When the heart is filled with compassion, even anger begins to fade.”
That day, young Mahavir understood something important:
Violence may control others for a moment…
but kindness can calm even the wildest hearts.
And slowly, the seeds of fearlessness and non-violence grew stronger within him.
🌸 What We Learn From This Story
- Compassion is stronger than fear
- Anger can be calmed with peace
- True courage comes from kindness
✨ To Be Continued…
But Mahavir’s journey toward enlightenment had only begun…
Soon, the young prince would face his greatest challenge yet -
leaving behind the royal palace and choosing the path of spirituality.
