🌿 Who Were the 24 Tirthankaras?
In Jainism, the word Tirthankara means “one who creates a path across the river of life and suffering. A Tirthankara is not a god or creator of the world. Instead, they are enlightened spiritual teachers who achieved complete wisdom and showed others the path toward peace, non-violence, and liberation. They conquered anger, greed, ego, and attachment, becoming completely pure souls. Jains deeply respect these great beings because they dedicated their lives to helping others find spiritual awakening.
The word comes from:
Tirtha = spiritual path or crossing
Kara = maker
So, a Tirthankara is:
“A maker of the spiritual path.”
They guide people across the cycle of birth, death, and suffering toward freedom of the soul.

🌸 Story Time with Young Mahavir
The Night Prince Mahavir Left the Palace
The royal palace of Kundagrama sparkled brightly under the moonlight. Soft music echoed through the halls. Servants walked quietly carrying golden lamps, while guards protected the palace gates. But inside his room, young Prince Mahavira sat silently near the window. The kingdom saw him as a prince blessed with wealth, luxury, and power. Yet deep inside, Mahavir’s heart felt restless. Night after night, he thought about the suffering in the world: people fighting, animals being hurt, souls trapped in greed and anger.
He realized something important:
True peace could never be found in luxury alone. That night, the palace slept peacefully…
But Mahavir made the biggest decision of his life. Quietly, he stood up and looked around his royal chamber one final time.
The golden decorations…
the silk curtains…
the crown prepared for his future…
He slowly removed his royal ornaments.
No anger.
No sadness.
Only peace.
Outside, the moonlight illuminated the silent palace gardens.
Mahavir walked gently through the halls where he had spent his childhood. Every step took him farther away from royal comfort and closer toward spiritual truth. At the palace gate, he paused for one last moment.
Behind him stood a life of power and luxury.
Ahead of him waited a difficult path filled with sacrifice, meditation, and self-discovery.
But Mahavir did not hesitate.
With calm eyes and a fearless heart, the young prince stepped beyond the palace walls and disappeared into the quiet night.
From that moment on, Prince Mahavir began his journey toward becoming one of the greatest spiritual teachers the world would ever know.
🌸 What We Learn From This Story
